Finding the nest
Wasps follow a consistent flight line back to the nest. Standing well back and watching where they enter the structure will find it faster than searching the yard.

Why retail sprays make it worse
A can of wasp spray from a hardware store reaches the outside of a nest. If the nest is inside a wall void or a soffit, the spray kills the wasps at the entrance and agitates the rest, which frequently pushes the colony to chew through into the living space instead.
The other risk is position. Most serious stinging incidents happen on a ladder, at height, to someone with no protective equipment and nowhere to retreat.
